Welcome To Surf City, New Jersey

long beach island new jersey nj
The town known as Surf City on Long Beach Island has an interesting history for a number of reasons. One of them is the fact that it was home to the first big boarding hotel built on the New Jersey coast known as the “Mansion of Health.” No one will argue the benefits of sea air and proximity to saltwater and sunshine in the summertime – hence the reference to “health” in its name - but that did not keep the building from burning down in 1874.

The following year of 1875 saw a group of about 20 permanent residents begin to refer to the area as Long Beach City, and this became the official name almost 20 years later in 1894, but five years after that the name was officially changed to Surf City in 1899.

Today, Long Beach Island is home to Surf City, and Surf City is the summer home to vacationers, weekenders and day-trippers who love a great time. The tides are strong along this area of the coast, and they have resulted in many shipwrecks over hundreds of years, but the tides also mean good surfing, too.

surf city beaches and ocean

Although just a quarter-mile wide, Surf City is very popular with families because of the quick access to the ocean and the bay. It has some of the most naturally beautiful beaches on the east coast, and visitors enjoy not only the beach and the water, but also choosing from hundreds of boutiques and restaurants that line the streets of the 20 communities on the island. Surf City visitors really enjoy good food and drink, as well as shopping along Long Beach Boulevard after a great day of swimming, surfing and sunning.
